- What is Nepalbhasa?
It is one of a major Language in Nepal belonging to Tibeto-Burmese family but highly infleunced by Indo-Aryan Language (Sanskrit).
- Is there written Nepalbhasa?
Nepalbhasa was once a rich language. It used to be written in different scripts in the past. Due to the supression of the language for more than a century, the old scripts are now only of cultural importance. Currenlty it is written in Devanagari script, used also by Nepal´s and Indian National languages.
- Who speaks Nepalbhasa?
Newars, mostly the people of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, a small country between Tibet and India used to speak Nepalbhasa.
- How many people speak Nepalbhasa?
The latest data available in July 2008: Newar population according to 2001, is 1,245,232. However not all Newars speak their Mother tongue. Unfortunately, a lot of Newars/Nepali are devoid of their mother tongue and also culture. The trend is increasing, thus decreasing the population to speak Nepal Bhasa.
- Are there education in Nepalbhasa?
So far there are 2 or 3 schools known. However the education is only of primary level.
- Who cares for Nepalbhasa?
A very few people are actively involved and taking care of the language.
